Richard Prince (American, b. 1949)
«Panama After Dark, 2010″Mixed Media collage on paper
7.3 x 5 in. (18.54 x 12.7 cm.)
Signed along right edge in black markerOver the years Richard Prince has trafficked in incorporating found photos and recycled text in his paintings and collages.
His “After Dark” series was inspired by his own collection of 1960s and 1970s paperback nightlife guides from different cities.
He recalled that there was something exotic and suggestive about the recommended activities in those books.
In 2010, he started publishing his own “After Dark” books in his studio, often with his own text that had nothing to do with the image.
Prince added collage to the cover of this “created” book. This particular book is important because the subject is Panama, where Prince was born in 1949.Provenance: Private Collection
